The school began as nursery school with approximately 40 children in 2009. Today, the school serves over 400 pupils between kindergarten and grade seven. At the end seventh grade, pupils in Uganda seat for National examination. The year 2015, the first group of pupils reached primary seven and sat for the Uganda Primary Leaving Examination (P.L.E).
When the results came out at the beginning of January 2016, COBURWAS Primary School was ranked among the best 20 schools in Hoima district. All pupils from CIYOTA who sat for the national examination scored first and second grades. This affirmed CIYOTA's ability to use the small resources to unlock the potential in every child in the refugee camp beginning from primary school to the University. COBURWAS Nursery and Primary School was selected among four Ashoka Changemaker Schools out of 113 nominated in East Africa.
Through COBURWAS Primary School and five other CIYOTA alumni founded schools, we are providing quality education to over 1,000 refugees children. CIYOTA model, enables us to sustain these programs at low cost and every child feels safe and has hope for a better future.
